July 2007 on a personal walking expedition, climbed two 'Wainwright' walks with son Andrew. Our first day was walking up Bowfell via 'The Band'; an oxygen depleting hike. On our second day we conquered the Langdale Pikes. The rear view picture, although looking like a suicide attempt, is really just me recovering breath before attempting Pike o' Stickle.

In the beginning

This is how it started. We got some press in the Halifax Evening Courier:

A new cardiac rehabilitation exercise centre is to open in Brighouse next week and could be extended to other areas of Calderdale.

The scheme is run by health professionals and Cardiac Rehabilitation through Exercise and Walking.

It will be open to all CREW members and some patients referred by their GP or Calderdale Royal Hospital.

Calder Valley Labour MP Chris McCafferty said: "As a patron of CREW, I know the importance of exercise in recovering from serious illnesses and in preventing them in the first place.

"The British Heart Foundation has provided great support with a grant so the class can run for at least 12 months."

To complement the centre's work, a walking group has also been set up in Brighouse organised by Brian Birkby.

Heart disease kills 110,000 people in England every year and Mrs McCafferty said she would like to see similar schemes introduced throughout the Calder Valley.
